چکیده
ASTHMA IS DEFINED as intermittent spells of bronchospasm with symptom-free periods in a child who has a history or family history of an allergic condition. When the bronchospasm does not respond to bronchodilator treatment, or when extensive plugging of the bronchioles with sticky opalescent mucus occurs, the child is in status asthmaticus. 1 Although the large majority of children admitted to hospital respond to conservative treatment, there is a definite incidence of children who do not respond to these measures, in whom the condition results in respiratory failure and death, z,3 A recent study from England of the mortality rate from asthma in all age groups has shown it to have almost doubled in the period from 1959 to 1966. 4 In the same study, in the 10-to-14-year age group, the death rate h a d increased eight times, accounting for 5.7 per cent of all deaths in that age group and equalling the number of deaths caused by leukemia and pneumonia. Smaller increases in mortality from asthma have been reported from Australia, Japan~ Western Europe, and the United States.

Pressure-controlled ventilation in children with severe status asthmaticus.
OBJECTIVE The optimum strategy for mechanical ventilation in a child with status asthmaticus is not established. Volume-controlled ventilation continues to be the traditional approach in such children. Pressure-controlled ventilation may be theoretically more advantageous in allowing for more uniform ventilation. We describe our experience with pressure-controlled ventilation in children with s...
متن کاملNoninvasive ventilation in status asthmaticus in children: levels of evidence
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the quality of available evidence to establish guidelines for the use of noninvasive ventilation for the management of status asthmaticus in children unresponsive to standard treatment. METHODS Search, selection and analysis of all original articles on asthma and noninvasive ventilation in children, published until September 1, 2014 in all languages in the electronic dat...
متن کاملRESPIRATION AND THE AIRWAY Emergency treatment of status asthmaticus with enoximone
Editor’s key points † Enoximone is a phospodiesterase III inhibitor, primarily used in treatment of heart failure. † The author presents a case report of eight patients with status asthmaticus refractory to treatment. † Enoximone was effective in all these patients in reversing bronchospasm. † Enoximone may have a role in refractory status asthmaticus in preventing tracheal intubation and mecha...
متن کاملNasal high flow in management of children with status asthmaticus: a retrospective observational study
BACKGROUND Asthma is the most common obstructive airway disease in children and adults. Nasal high flow (NHF) is a recent device that is now used as a primary support for respiratory distress. Several studies have reported use of NHF as a respiratory support in status asthmaticus; however, there are no data to recommend such practice. We therefore conducted this preliminary study to evaluate NH...
متن کاملControlled vs Spontaneous Ventilation for Bronchoscopy in Children with Tracheobronchial Foreign Body
Introduction Tracheobronchial foreign body aspiration is a common life-threatening condition in children. There are controversies in the management of this condition, including the type of ventilation during bronchoscopy. This study aims to compare anesthesia with controlled ventilation versus spontaneous ventilation in rigid bronchoscopy in children with foreign body aspiration. Materials...
